With a total of $20.35m, comprising $15.97m State Government funding with a $4.35m council co-contribution, Shellharbour Airport will see runway overlays, runway lighting, additional aircraft parking capacity and the foundations of an aviation business park as well as a new terminal building.
The upgrades will continue to support projected growth in aircraft traffic and provide improved reliability in various weather conditions. The new apron to be constructed will facilitate aircraft parking for larger regional jets catering for forecast growth.
The main runway will see an overlay of asphalt at an average depth of 50mm. The asphalt upgrades will improve the existing chip seal surface by minimising loose chips associated with age and reduce the wear and tear on aircraft tyres, providing a smoother surface and better rideability.
